Belonging – A sense of place
People having a sense of belonging and a sense of place are very important to the well being of communities. It is important to understand where communities come from, how they got there, the social norms and traditions that they bring, but also the culture, stories, songs and experiences that enrich our everyday lives. This relates strongly to culture both from newly arrived communities, but also the changing culture of neighbourhoods over time. People associate sense of place strongly with belonging and identity, which can be felt and fostered, but not necessarily created. Community events and initiatives such as “Four Corners” that support many people getting involved are ways
of fostering a sense of place.
Arts in Regeneration (AiR) worked with Liverpool City Council’s South Central Neighbourhood Management Team/Capital of Culture Creative Communities team to develop the “Four Corners” commission within the Granby Triangle area of L8 for 2007. AiR worked in partnership with:
Granby Care Home, Unity Youth & Community Project, Granby SureStart Children’s Centre, Granby Residents Association,PSS Gateway Project,Somali Umbrella Group,Chara Trust and the West African Elders Group for the Four Corners celebrations 2007.
AiR’s cultural exploration with the communities of Granby has produced work that is dynamic, edgy, multi cultural, and mixed media…. giving unique insights to life in the Granby Triangle…”BELONGING”…a celebration of human endeavour, achievement and spirit, and a sharing of stories that circumnavigate the globe. A Visual Feast that is full of hope, joy, choice, respect, and reflective of community life in an inner city neighbourhood undergoing massive change. |
